PGD
Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis or PGD is another type of genetic screening, it is used to detect genes for specific diseases. This screening is important if you or your partner has a family genetic history and you want to make sure that you don’t pass the gene on to your child. In some situation, you may become a carrier of the disease rather than infect the disease yourself.
PGD screening include:
- Gene translocation (chromosomal material exchange or other structural rearrangement) may cause birth defects, mental retardation or abortion
- Huntington’s disease
- Marfan syndrome
- Recessive diseases, such as cystic fibrosis or Tay Sachs disease
- The X chromosome carries genetic diseases, such as hemophilia or Duchenne muscular dystrophy
- Gender, which allows you to avoid X-linked genetic diseases (most boys have these)
- Chromosome number abnormality
Same as PGS, PGD screening also is an additional step in IVF treatment and is detected before embryo transfer, because PGD detected a single gene, the cost of PGD is higher than that of PGS. Any kind of detached or screening maybe cause harm to embryos, so it is important to choose a fertility center with experienced embryologists.
