PGS
Preimplantation Genetic Screening or PGS is a genetic screening, It is used to determine whether the cells in the embryo have the correct number of chromosomes. Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes, If chromosome abnormalities, such as too many or too few chromosomes, they are the most common causes of embryo transfer failure and abortion.
PGS does not detect specific diseases. However, Down’s syndrome is caused by the presence of additional chromosome 21, which can be detected by PGS.
If you are ≥ 35 years old and are receiving IVF treatment with your own eggs, or if you have a history of abortion, your fertility expert may recommend PGS to increase the chances of transferring healthy embryos, through the PGS screening, reproductive endocrinologists can transfer the healthiest embryos, then to increase the chance of IVF success rate. Generally, this PGS screening requires 5 or 6 embryos, this is particularly challenging for older women with reduced ovarian reserves. Some female may need multiple IVF cycles to store enough embryos for PGS screening.
PGS screening is an additional step in IVF treatment and is detected before embryo transfer, the price of screening includes the cost of cell biopsy in the embryology laboratory and the cost charged by the gene testing company, depending on the number of embryos detected.
