In vitro fertilization (IVF), commonly known as “test-tube baby,” is a reproductive procedure involving the extraction of a woman’s eggs and a man’s sperm, followed by fertilization outside the body. The resulting embryo is then transferred into the woman’s uterus. The specific process involves stimulating the woman’s ovaries with medications to produce multiple eggs, retrieving the mature eggs, directly injecting sperm into the eggs, allowing the embryos to divide into 4 to 8 cells by the third day and develop into blastocysts with over 100 cells by the fifth day. The best-developed embryos are selected according to the patient’s preferences and transferred back into the uterine cavity for further growth and development. The medical term for this procedure is “in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer.”
