A couple from Hunan, China, had been married for ten years without conceiving. Five years ago, they went to the hospital and discovered that the wife had blocked fallopian tubes. Eager to have a child, she immediately underwent surgery to clear the blockage. The doctor warned that the blockage might recur after a few months, so they needed to conceive before it happened again, or they would require another operation.
Over the next two years, they underwent three more fallopian tube clearance surgeries but unfortunately did not achieve pregnancy. Frustrated, they considered trying in vitro fertilization (IVF). The first attempt was in 2020 at a local hospital, where 10 eggs were retrieved, 8 were fertilized, resulting in 4 embryos that were all implanted. However, the pregnancy failed before reaching 40 days.
Undeterred, the couple, after recovering in 2021, decided to try IVF again. This time, they chose a better-reputed hospital in Shanghai. Due to multiple fallopian tube clearance surgeries and the declining ovarian function, only 7 eggs were retrieved, 5 were fertilized, but the implantation failed, leading to another unsuccessful attempt.
Feeling hopeless, the couple decided not to pursue having children. Two years later, a friend who had quietly undergone successful IVF in the United States returned with a baby, reigniting a spark of hope for the couple. This friend, who already had a child in college, decided to try IVF cautiously. After one cycle, two viable embryos were produced. They found a surrogate mother, and the friend returned to China only after the child was born in the U.S.
For the couple who had endured countless challenges on their journey to parenthood, this news was a lifeline. Through their friend’s recommendation, they reached out to our clinic and shared their medical history. Due to their age, we advised them that IVF is better sooner rather than later. They underwent domestic examinations and started the U.S. visa process simultaneously. They quickly traveled to the U.S., and as of now, everything is progressing well: 15 eggs were retrieved, 11 were fertilized. Although the final pregnancy result is pending, the doctor indicated that there are almost no issues. Encouraged by the doctor’s words, the couple joyfully prepared for the arrival of their child, and life taught them a valuable lesson: “Do not give up on life.”
