Can You Have Intercourse Before and After Embryo Transfer During IVF in the U.S.?
Before Fresh Cycle Transfer:
During ovarian stimulation, particularly in the later stages, it’s advised to avoid intercourse. This is because the ovaries are enlarged, and intense physical activity or sudden changes in posture could increase the risk of ovarian torsion.
Before Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET):
Intercourse is generally allowed during the preparation phase for FET. In fact, research from Australia suggests that having intercourse the night before a frozen embryo transfer might improve pregnancy rates.
On the Day of Transfer and After:
Whether it’s a fresh or frozen embryo, intercourse should be avoided on the day of the transfer and during the post-transfer period. Additionally, it’s best to abstain during the first and third trimesters of pregnancy to reduce any potential risks.
